The Acumen Global Training team includes a group of extraordinary faculty members with broad backgrounds in IFRS, US GAAP, Auditing, and so many more topics. All of our instructors have an impressive list of past clients in many of the major industries. Because the global economy is constantly changing, we make it our job to stay on top of any new developments in accounting standards or rules that may apply to various businesses. Our instructors constantly update their knowledge and training for all new pronouncements and provide vivid examples and case studies to illustrate the major concepts.   • Bobbe M. Barnes

    Bobbe is an educator and consultant with many years of professional experience in IFRS, US GAAP, and certification training around the world. She worked nine years overseas specializing in emerging economies, where she led the team that developed the Certified International Professional Accounting certificate program, comprising training courses and examinations. Bobbe has worked in many countries including the USA, Africa, Central America, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Russia, Ukraine, Middle East, China, Indonesia, Mongolia, and South Korea. Bobbe is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA), a Certified Management Accountant (CMA), and a Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM). In addition, she was active in the Institute of Management Accountants, having served on the Global Board of Directors and as Associate Dean of the Leadership Academy.

    She was a keynote speaker at the International Accounting and Auditing Conference in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and a speaker at the fifth annual Middle East IFRS and Accounting Summit 2009 in Dubai, where she also conducted a full day workshop on Financial Instruments.

    Currently she is an active Rotarian, serving her Rotary Club of Fair Oaks Ranch as Vice-President, and District 5840 as Treasurer and Chair of the Foundation Grants Committee.

  • Steve Henning

    Steven Henning, Ph. D., CPA, is the Partner-in-Charge of the Litigation and Corporate Financial Advisory Services Group at Marks Paneth & Shron LLP, a leading New York accounting firm. He has more than 20 years of experience in public accounting, securities litigation, consulting related to both US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP), International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS), as well as teaching at the university level.

    Dr. Henning’s work includes: helping foreign private issuers to register and list their shares in the U.S.; counseling Boards of Directors on SEC reporting requirements; assisting with the transition of accounts from U.S. accounting standards to IFRS; conducting accounting training sessions for the personnel of multinational companies headquartered abroad; aiding corporations with revenue recognition and other financial reporting issues; performing acquisition due diligence; and consulting on M&A-related accounting issues. Dr. Henning was an accounting professor for several years at the University of Colorado and at Southern Methodist University. Throughout his academic career, he received numerous teaching awards and also served for a year as an Academic Fellow in the Office of the Chief Accountant at the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Dr. Henning is currently a member of the NASDAQ Listing Qualifications Panel and a past member of the SEC Regulations Committee, which acts as the primary liaison between the accounting profession and the SEC on technical matters relating to SEC rules and regulations. In addition, he has consulted with the SEC on auditor oversight issues. He has presented continuing education courses for organizations including Goldman Sachs and the United States Department of Justice.

  • Lewis E. Ekiyor

    Lewis E. Ekiyor has significant expertise in the areas of IFRS for SME’s and IFRS adoption in Nigeria.

    He is a dedicated and proactive professional who combines an impressive educational skill set, working as an accountant, as a senior audit manager, as well as a team leader within an IFRS Management and Consulting Unit, along with experiences in investment and asset management.

    He has more than eight years of accounting and advisory experience in Nigeria and has planned and executed numerous in-house and open training sessions according to IFRS requirements and applications as issued by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB).

    He has participated in Financial Reporting training in the United Kingdom and undertaken IFRS consultancy work with the California Certified Public Accountants (CPA) Education Foundation and is also involved in a World Bank sponsored IFRS project with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW).

    Lewis is a member of the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants). He is also member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. He has also qualified as a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA). Furthermore, Lewis holds a B.Sc (Hons) from Oxford Brookes University, as well as a Master’s Degree in Accounting & Finance (with Distinction) from Aberdeen Business School, both in the United Kingdom.

  • Richard Lewis

    Richard Lewis is a banking professional with extensive financial program implementation experience in emerging economies. He has served as Chief of Party for two USAID-funded bank training institution programs in Armenia and Bulgaria. For both programs he focused on strengthening the institutional capacity of the bank training centers and developing a sustainability plan to ensure continued success for the institutes after the USAID programs ended. In these roles, Mr. Lewis developed training curricula, delivered seminars, and oversaw training sessions provided by a cadre of local trainers. Mr. Lewis built the capacity of local staff and developed trusting relationships with local counterparts. For USAID and other international clients, he has also advised on the matters of SME development, credit risk management, asset/liability management, corporate governance, human resource planning, marketing, customer service and strategic planning.

    Before undertaking his many overseas banking assignments, Mr. Lewis spent 30 years as a banker in the US for two separate banks in Pennsylvania, Lehigh Valley Bank (LVB) and First Pennsylvania Bank. He was the Chief Executive Officer and President of LVB. Mr. Lewis holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Muhlenberg College and also earned diplomas from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Rutgers University Stonier Graduate School of Banking.

  • Christine Anderson

    Christine M. Anderson, CPA, is a Partner with Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP and has been with the firm since 2007. Christine has 20 years of working in finance, insurance operations, project management, and change management. She is experienced in leading, developing and implementing strategic initiatives.

    Christine’s specific experience:

    • Insurance Audit Partner responsible for several statutory and GAAP audits for insurance entities.
    • Has 14 years of previous audit and advisory services experience as a former member of the financial institutions group of a national accounting firm.
    • Five years of experience as a senior finance leader in $3 billion multi-line insurance company.
    • Operational experience leading insurance financial operations including internal audit, controller, tax, planning and financial reporting.
    • Assists clients in the implementation and compliance with Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 and Model Audit Rule.
    • OFAC and AML control design and effectiveness.
    • Experience in accounting for acquisitions and performing due diligence procedures. Performs reinsurance and risk transfer evaluations.
    • Possesses experience in statutory to GAAP conversions and mutual company de-mutualization’s.
    • Experience in preparing and delivering rating agency presentations.

    Christine is a professional speaker; she is an instructor for “International Accounting for Insurance Companies” and “US GAAP for Insurance Companies”. She is a guest lecturer at the University of Wisconsin Madison Graduate Program for “How Insurance Companies make Money”. Christine has also delivered presentations to the Insurance Accounting & Systems Association (“Model Audit Rule”), where she is Vice President, and has published articles on international accounting (How Fast is the Train Really Coming – Interpreter June 2008) and fair value (Who Decides What Is Fair – Interpreter April 2009).

  • Veronique Weets

    Dr. Véronique Weets is a Professor of International Accounting and a faculty member at two Belgian universities. Veronique participates regularly in Master Programs at various Business schools. Véronique Weets was also associated with the IFRS Technical desk of Deloitte in Belgium, where she was involved in client work on matters such as the transition to IFRS and the subsequent application of IFRS to listed companies. She was also responsible for client training as well as training of the professional staff. Veronique helps clients with the application of IFRS on a daily basis through training or consultancy. This means that she actively searches for the practical translation of this principle based framework of accounting in order to provide realistic solutions to clients. Therefore, facilitation sessions provided by Véronique have always a strong theoretical basis that is translated to practical applications which are relevant to the business environment of attendees. In addition to this, Véronique is an author of numerous technical accounting literatures in English, French and Dutch. She holds an ACCA IFRS Certificate.

  • Yasmine Misuraca

    Yasmine L. Misuraca, CPA, CFE, is a Director in the Litigation and Corporate Financial Advisory Services Group at Marks Paneth & Shron LLP. She has more than 15 years of experience working in public accounting and industry providing securities litigation, litigation consulting and forensic accounting services. Ms. Misuraca has an in-depth knowledge of both US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS). She has consulted with clients on the application of these principles and standards for business transactions and events including in the context of securities and other litigation. Ms. Misuraca has worked with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on a number of large, high-profile cases. She also consults with major law firms and corporate counsel on all aspects of their cases. Ms. Misuraca’s experience also includes conducting fraud investigations, forensic examinations, calculating and analyzing economic damages as well as analysis of financial issues as part of case strategy. In addition, she has experience with creditors’ committees. Prior to joining Marks Paneth & Shron LLP, Ms. Misuraca developed a thorough knowledge of internal controls and internal audit from both a public accounting and an industry perspective. She has held positions in Big Four accounting firm and in Fortune 500 companies. A certified public accountant, she has also earned the designation of Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). Ms. Misuraca is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.

  • Michael Bechara

    Michael Bechara, CPA is Managing Director of the Granite Consulting Group, an internal audit and financial management consultancy. Michael typically works with CFOs, Audit Committees and financial managers to build sustainable governance, control and financial management processes.

    His work includes assisting clients in enterprise risk assessment, performing complex profitability analysis, integrating acquisitions, and improving critical business processes. Under Michael’s leadership Granite has developed an advanced neural network risk assessment model capable of identifying and analyzing risk in complex environments.

    Michael has extensive financial management experience in corporate headquarters environments and has held positions with Pepsi Bottling Group, Daimler AG and EDO Corporation. At EDO, Michael was Director of Internal Audit and oversaw Department of Defense compliance reviews, risk based audits and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance. Michael was also actively involved in advising the Board of Directors on corporate governance matters and was appointed to several Senior Management Committees, i.e. Export Compliance, Review ∓ Disclosure, etc.

  • Eamonn Walsh

    Eamonn is PricewaterhouseCoopers Professor of Accounting at UCD. He has served as Dean of the Smurfit School of Business and Chairman of the Accounting Department. His primary research, teaching and consulting interests are in the areas of financial analysis, equity valuation and US securities markets. A co-author of three books, his research has been published in Accounting Organisations and Society, the Journal of Business Finance and Accounting and the Journal of Accounting Auditing and Finance. He was the founding editor of European Accounting and served as associate editor of the Journal of Accounting Auditing and Finance.

    Prior to joining UCD, he held faculty positions at the London School of Economics and New York University. Visting appointments have included UC Berkeley and Peking University. A consultant to a number of leading European, US and Asian corporations, he has also completed assignments with governmental organisations, the International Monetary Fund and the United Nations. He was the inaugural recipient of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Excellence in Education Award and has been a presenter at the World Economic Forum.

  • Kurt P. Ramin

    Previously Kurt worked as a consultant at AccountAbility to introduce Business Reporting Standards in 80 countries around the globe and at the IFRS Foundation in London.

    Prior to his work with AoountAbility and IFRS Foundation, Kurt was a Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers in New York. He holds a MBA degree and CPA, CEBS and CFE (in progress) certifications. From 2008 to 2012, Kurt served as Treasurer on the Council of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s largest association of conservation agencies, headquartered in Switzerland.

    Earlier in his career Kurt worked in key financial and operating positions at Beiersdorf (“Nivea”), Emery Industries (“Henkel”) and Dow Corning. He also held positions at a large German hypermarket company and Mercedes Benz Credit Corporation.
    In 2012 Kurt co
    -authored the book “IFRS and XBRL: How to improve Business Reporting through Technology and Object Tracking” and contributed to “Public Interest and Private Rights in Social Media” (2012).

  • Peter Thatcher

    Peter Thatcher is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and an independent trainer and consultant with over 25 years experience in designing and delivering UK GAAP and IFRS training courses around the world.

    After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1984, Peter moved into a career in training. In 1986 he joined a major training company teaching financial reporting and auditing for the ICAEW and ACCA exams in the UK. He became a director of the company and headed the North-West region.

    In 1995 he set up his own business, writing and presenting public and in-house training programmes for major accounting firms and blue chip companies. Since 2003, he has delivered IFRS training in the UK and overseas to international and national firms of accountants and to companies in a wide range of business sectors including financial services, property, construction, mining, manufacturing, retail, support services and local government.

    In addition to his training programmes, Peter’s consultancy work includes helping private and listed companies to manage their transition to IFRS and acting as an adviser on specific technical accounting issues.

    Peter’s technical knowledge and enthusiasm for his subject ensures that his training programmes are both enjoyable and highly effective.
